Motivation starts with compensation

All my conversations with candidates for IT positions started and ended with the same question: What compensation do you offer? And this is perfectly natural as long as most of us are seeking employment to meet our basic needs.

However, we often hear from management consultants that "money is not the point". Of course! In our culture, you must be quiet about the money or say nothing.

Despite the hype of "top employers" and the trends dictated by them—from free yoga classes to unlimited vacations (I say this without any criticism) —I'm just reminding you that reward is the major (not necessarily essential) motivation for which a critical mass of people choose to employ their time.

And this doesn't mean that other motivational factors (interesting and challenging work, colleagues, meaning, etc.) are not important. This means that an adequate reward is a secure basis for the other needs.
