Is it the end of the golden era in tech?

Updated: Aug 24, 2023

In April, Blind—a tech career community—surveyed 7,300+ software engineers in the US about their salary expectations [1].

The survey discloses a changing picture of the tech job market: the offered higher salary is no longer such a strong incentive to change jobs. Most respondents would accept the same or even lower salary to meet other important needs: e.g., the ability to work partly or fully remotely, a more fit company culture, work-life balance, or more ample opportunities to grow.

The results include the following:

💵 About 56% of respondents claimed they would accept equal or less pay in a new role.

🌊 Of them, 45% said that the primary reasons for this attitude are the cooling job market and layoff wave in tech industry.

⚖️ 19% of respondents said that the critical factors when considering a job offer are a strong company culture and work-life balance.

👨🏻‍💻 The Blind survey also shows that engineers’ salary expectations have dropped on average by 5% in a year.

📉 Expectations of junior and mid-level engineers lowered the most - by 8 and 10%, respectively.

🤏 The least (3%) salary expectation fall is among highly experienced talents (e.g., engineering managers) and entry-level specialists.
